Hand weights are the most simple form of exercise equipment - just a dead weight held in each hand. Dumbbells are the commonest form, but they come in all shapes and sizes. People who want to develop muscle tone, rather than bulk, should use very light weights and do lots of repetitions.
The hand weights used in our exercises are small. Depending on the exercise, either a 500g, 1kilo or 1.5kilo weight in each hand is ample for most people.
If you don't have any hand weights you could create your own by using a couple of tins of soup or two 500ml bottles of water. You can use anything you like, as long as it is easy to hold securely, isn't going to break or damage anything if you drop it, and is of equal weight in each hand.
